This animation shows a front-end cutaway view of a V-type engine. It shows the air-fuel mixture produced by the carburetor flowing through the intake manifold, past the intake valve and into the cylinder as the piston is pulled down in the cylinder by the crankshaft. Next, the intake valve closes and the piston is pushed up the cylinder by the crankshaft. When the piston nears the top of the cylinder a spark occurs igniting the air fuel mixture forcing the piston back down the cylinder. As the piston reaches the bottom of the cylinder the exhaust valve opens allowing the combustion gasses to escape into the exhaust manifold.
